"FAQ" - Frequently Asked Questions

What metals are safe for body jewellery?

Surgical Stainless Steel and Titanium are ideal for initial and subsequent body jewellery. We use both these metals for the body jewellery available on this site. Our surgical stainless steel is implant grade 316L. The "L" means it is pure, having had nickle, tin and other unwanted metals leached from the steel.

Titanium is very expensive but it is half the weight of any other metal, twice as strong and 100% biocompatible. To reduce costs whilst still retaining "the titanium factor", our Blackline body jewellery items offered here are surgical stainless steel with a titanium pvd coating.

PVD refers to the process of Physical Vapour Deposition. PVD is often used to produce implant-grade and autoclavable body jewellery that is black. Biocompatible titanium coating is vapourised in an arc then electrically deposited on stainless steel body jewellery.

What is BodyJewelleryDirect.com.au's body jewellery made from?

Our body jewellery is imported from the USA and is made from surgical stainless steel (grade 316L) with our Blackline items being surgical stainless steel (316L) with a pvd titanium coating. See above.

And each item comes individually packaged with a FREE Sterile Wipe. Even the FREE item we offer with our "Buy two items and receive a third item FREE" comes packed with a Sterile wipe to ensure your safety. It is this genuine interest in your well-being that sets Body Jewellery Direct apart from the rest.

Why are some items of body jewellery on the internet so cheap?

We cannot say for certain because we cannot comment on other business's integrity, but good quality body jewellery is not cheap...regular stainless steel is cheap to manufacture. It is generally 316 and not 316L. The "L" means that nickle, tin and other undesirable metals are leached out. 99.9% of users of 316 will exhibit a reaction to the cheap quality. You've seen the Ads: "Buy a 100 pcs for $100 etc etc"  ...  please be cautious. The "great deals" might give you a great deal of pain, medical expense and disfigurement. Body jewellery from Body Jewellery Direct is GUARANTEED 316L Surgical Stainless Steel or titanium. This means it is of a quality used in surgical pins and screws - guaranteed to be bio-compatible. This is the ONLY quality to be used for body piercing jewellery. This guarantee can only come from manufacturers who supply the BEST QUALITY. We, at Body Jewellery Direct only buy from such manufacturers and therefore guarantee the highest quality.

Is your jewellery suitable for initial piercings?

We only deal with body jewellery that is from first change down from initial piercing. Your body piercing practitioner will assist you as to requirements for initial piercing/s.

What does the mm and g abreviations relate to?

mm relates to millimeters in length. Lengths start at 6mm increasing in 2mm increments to 8mm, 10mm etc.
g relates to the gauge, that is the thickness of the metal bar. The higher the gauge, the thinner the metal bar.

We deal in two gauges, 16g and 14g (16g being thinner)

As examples, our navel bars are 10mm 14g: the bar is 10mm in length and the thickness of the bar is the thicker of the two gauges we deal in; and
our tongue bars are 16mm 14g: the bar is 16mm in length and again, the thickness is the thicker of the two gauges we deal in.

I've just recently had a body piercing and wondered how long will it take to heal?

Primary healing varies as listed below. During this time, the jewellery should not be removed. The healing time must not be rushed. You may think the piercing has healed when in fact it has not quite - if it is handled roughly, exposed to mouth contact or unwashed hands (ie germs) problems may occur. So please, be patient and kind to yourself.

Monroe piercing: placed off-centre in the upper lip, meant to resemble a beauty spot (3-6 months primary healing)
Nostril: (3-6 months)
Septum (3-4 months)
Ear lobes: 3-4 months)
Ear cartilage (4-8 months)
Eyebrow (3 - 6  months)
Tongue (2-3 months)
Navel (4-8 months)
Lip (labret) 3-4 months

Full healing starts after primary healing is complete and takes about the same time again. During full healing, the skins thickens and starts to gain elasticity. After full healing is complete, additional changes occur during a "toughening up" period which takes as long again as the initial primary healing time. During this third phase, the shiny scar-like surface gives way to skin of "normal" texture and appearance.

What if I don't want a particular body piercing anymore?

Simple...just remove the jewellery carefully and a healthy piercing should heal on its own. If there is any sign of infection, the infection should be treated first and only when the infection has passed should the jewellery be removed. This is to ensure that a healing piercing will not trap any infection.
